A bit about B.A.S.T...

July 11, 2016

So my B.A.S.T training certificate came though the post last week!

Let me tell you a little bit about B.A.S.T and why, alongside my performing experience, I'm now best placed and qualified to help you get the best from your voice, whether you're a beginner or professional.

Be A Singing Teacher (B.A.S.T) is a fully comprehensive, singing teacher training course that is becoming one of the most recognised courses in its field in the UK. It was developed by London-based Vocal Coach, Line Hilton B.Mus Ed, MSc (www.linehilton.com) and in association with the Vocology in Practice (ViP) Singing Teacher network. There are 4 teachers in the UK that are presently certified B.A.S.T Teacher Trainers and over the course of 10 weeks last summer, I was lucky enough to work with Ian Davidson, founder of Balance Vocal Studio in Liverpool (www.singingliverpool.co.uk).

The course comprises of 20 hours of training and provides the student with a extensive knowledge of everything needed in order to succeed as a vocal coach. It can be used to help singers that perform in a wide variety of genres, using science as it's basis for the method of teaching. It's also an ideal opportunity for existing singing teachers who want to refresh or update their skill set and covers topics such as:

- Anatomy of the voice (larynx, vocal cords, respiratory system)
- Vocal exercises sounds/scales/instruction
- The science behind singing
- Teaching/learning styles and pedagogy
- Interactive teaching sessions
- Vocal pathology ie vocal damage
- Vocal health advice

On completion of the course last summer, I now have a clear and practical method for succeeding as a singing teacher!

Teachers that complete the course are invited to the B.A.S.T Forum with past graduates and B.A.S.T trainers, so any help needed is always available from a variety of professionals. I've never felt more well connected as a teacher, knowing that I have the backing and support of some of the most connected and generous people.

Put this alongside my professional experience in Musical theatre over the last 10 years and I'm best placed to help you with confidence and nerves too... just what you need before you throw yourself in to that open mic, gig or audition!
